Cultural events

cultural and artistic life in Lodz

Lodz is an economical and cultural capital of the region and also the city of festivals. A few dozen of regular cultural events take place in Łódź every year that are recognised across Poland and Europe.

Camerimage

CamerimageFor almost 50 years Lodz has been a polish capital of film-making. The Leon Schiller's National Higher School of Film, Television and Theatre in Lodz is the most notable academy for future actors, directors, photographers, camera operators and TV staff in Poland. Majority of the best polish actors, directors and camera operators has received their education in Lodz. The city was also for many years a place where most polish films were made. For this purpose Lodz is often called “HollyLodz” (which in polish language is pronounced similarly to “Hollywood”).

To cherish the city’s connections with the movie world, in Lodz takes place the most prestige polish movie festival – International Festival of the Art and Cinematography Camerimage established by Sven Nykvist and Vittorio Storaro in 1993. It starts in the end of November and lasts for 7 days.

Festival of Dialogue of Four Cultures

Festival of Dialogue of Four CulturesIn the times of city’s greatest economical and cultural blossom, 19th and early 20th century, Lodz was a place where four mixing cultures, four nations and many mentalities worked side by side to create their own "small Motherland". Polish, Jew, German and Russian people were coming here as immigrants seeking their Promised Land, making it one of the most densely populated industrial cities in the world; they lived next to one another and went together through periods of prosperity and tragic events. It was a melting pot of nations, customs and national characteristics. For almost two hundred years these four nations could find their common way of living, they learnt how to be tolerant and respect others. Common Europe-to which we are making our way nowadays - made its first steps in Lodz. The festival is meant to promote the town’s history, cultural heritage and tolerance. It consists of various theatrical and dance performances, photo exhibitions and musical concerts prepared by artists from Poland, Israel, Germany and Russia. Starts in the beginning of September and lasts for 10 days.
